Mental health is both a local and a global problem of growing magnitude. This led Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of WHO to conclude: “We must now find ways to make sure that access to mental health services becomes a reality for all men, women and children, wherever they live.”Īddiction and mental illnesses have been torturing individuals and families, destroying lives, devastating communities across the class spectrum and even impact GDPs. Turns out that “depression and anxiety disorders cost the world nearly US $1 trillion annually.” However, about $4 trillion is made in treating these ailments. A landmark 2016 WHO study indicated a previously un-researched connection between depression and economy. There is yet another cost that has only recently come into light: the social economic cost. Around 450 million people currently suffer from such conditions, placing mental disorders among the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide.” In 2001, The World Health Organization published a press release stating, “One in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives.
